About the Project

Storyscape teamed up with the Department of Justice and Community Safety, Victoria Police, Headspace, YSAS, and Neami YFlex to design and deliver a creative community safety/mental health project with Year 8 and 9 students at The Lakes School, South Morang.

Through the 10-week program we explored topics including mental health, digital safety, alcohol and drugs, and family violence. Students expressed their thoughts and solutions through photography, visual art, poetry, dance, animation and filmmaking. We joined forces once again with the very talented Monkeymarc, Mantra, Candice Monique, and Melbourne Playback Theatre to deliver the creative elements. The end products were a short film, photo story exhibition, advocacy artworks, poems and performance pieces.

The second phase of this project was the Our Minds Our World Community Safety Expo. Attending local schools took part in a Melbourne Playback Theatre Show, viewed the creative works produced by The Lakes students, participated in interactive mini-workshops and contributed to discussions on a Q&A panel. Students went on to proudly share their film and perspectives on mental health at various other events.
